Ever walked down the street and observe for a brief moment an amazing reflection of a building in the window? Sure. We all have. But we seldom stop to take a closer look. That’s what I do.
I capture the moment most of us see in a brief glance of a store window in our hurried days. Stopping to look deeper and longer can yield spectacular results from straight up architectural and geometric appreciation, to modern abstractions and fine art photography. I like to think of my work as “pedestrian” as my window reflections have come to define a new level of the pedestrian’s observation.
Many have an illustrative quality with the appearance of layered imagery. However, no multi-image are applied, and with just a few exceptions, the images are untouched by color enhancement. I pull from a window the organic depth, color, vibrancy, geometry and collage that is available to passing pedestrians, if they would stop to look a little deeper.
How does one classify this new pedestrian point of view? Some have used terms such as "expressionism" "impressionism" , "constructivism" and more. But me…as a musician, I describe my window reflections as modern jazz. Improvisation of the moment plays within a framework and structure.
Like jazz each image comes alive through a combination of elements, separately or together…the time of day, angle of sun, the color and quality of the glass, surface heat and length of shot, interior colors, exterior motion, lines and space of subjects, people, displays, height, reflection and of course how clean the glass is (very important)…these are the notes. The images, like a jazz composition are fleeting in the moment, but stay with you in the recording.
